Hair Loss and Low Carb Diets
Low carb diets have increasingly become popular with health conscious individuals. A low carb diet emphasizes on intake of minimal amount of carbohydrates and an increased intake of fats. It is considered as a quick way of losing weight. Weight conscious people follow low carb diets on a regular basis to reduce weight faster.
Very often, low carb diets are effective but they have side effects that can be detrimental to the health of the person. Dieters consume protein and fats in higher quantity that results in side effects such as hair loss and digestion problems. Many dieters who follow low carb diets notice hair loss.
Most people on a low carb diet are advised to avoid carbohydrates such as fruits and vegetables. These are source of energy for the working of the brain. When there is deficiency of these essential ingredients the person is fatigued and there can be problems of sleeplessness. Proteins are good for rebuilding of tissue and help in wear and tear. At the same time, too much of protein can cause problems to liver and kidney. In turn, this may result in kidney stone formation. Proteins also play an important part in nail and hair formation. An imbalance in protein intake may affect growth of hair. Increased fat intake especially animal fats are difficult to digest and may result in constipation.
A low carb diet should be followed only if the doctor prescribes for it. Low carb diets that are followed for small period of time are more beneficial than those followed for longer periods. Doctors may suggest other methods of losing weight. This way, harmful side effects such as hair loss can be avoided. Researchers have yet to ascertain exact relation of harmful symptoms to low carb diets. Extensive studies would educate dieters with risks and consequences of following low carb diets.
